another rejection letter today

This one was from The Multi-Arts Production Fund.

I'm particularly bummed because I met their program officers in New York in January. They were very enthusiastic about Migritude and encouraged me to apply. I was leaving for Nairobi in two days. I spent the next 48 hours in frantic email communication with collaborators and my amazing friend / grantwriter J. I asked huge last-minute favors of them to pull it all together, and get it in before the deadline. I remember panting through the Village, the morning of the day I flew, to hand-deliver my work sample DVDs at the MAP Fund offices.

That's 5 rejections so far this year. Funding rejections, that is. I don't want to even start counting the number of presenters / festivals / venues that have turned Migritude down.

I keep reminding myself of Van Gogh, who didn't sell a single painting in his lifetime.

Ah, but let's remember the acceptances, the moments of triumph, the growth on stage, the help from friends, the amazing work, and that it is happening.

It may seem like a small thing - but the encouragement from the MAP fund program officers, even though the panels didn't select the work is a huge thing. Just as the second to final round accomplishment was with Creative Work Fund - these are actually major steps in the process, and amazing for a first-time out.

You are a triumph - the work is being supported and seen. And yes, ouch, it hurts and feels like a big obstacle that causes a feeling of stumbling when those no letters come in - but there have been really big yes moments too. Remember Nairobi, remember the small club in New York, remember Vienna, remember the UN Womens Guild, remember remember remember the yes moments and stay on course, the rest is coming. I am sure of it.
