one of my favorite smells in the world

Freshly chopped ginger, garlic, and green chillies, simmering in hot oil with cumin seeds and black mustard seeds. I made squash soup with this as a base for lunch today - just sniffing it as it cooked filled me up.

Is it two great minds that think alike, or two great friends? And I quote: “made some chili curry cumin black bean long grain rice to go with broccoli” “I also have four kinds of fall squash, but I'll have to save them for another night”

Funny how two of my favorite friends eat similarly over the holidays (holidays for some), I wouldn’t know what to do with a pinch of cumin and black mustard seeds, perhaps toss it over my right shoulder or mix it with some pancake batter?

Or put it under your pillow at night and see what it does for your dreams :-)

Read Chitra Divakaruni's Mistress of Spices, set in Oakland. The film of the book, shot in Oakland, will be released next month. I'll be doing readings and performances, in and around the city, for the One City - One Book program that Oakland Public Libraries is mounting in conjunction. See my Calendar for details.

Although your food-based smells are good, I think you're neglecting many great nontraditional smells such as gasoline and damp basements.

I've compiled my list here if anyone cares:

Sorry, no spices though, hah.
