something's askew

when I feel guilty over time spent writing poems.

This morning, I should've been working on funding proposals, travel arrangements, prepping for my performances at the World Social Forum. Instead, I played with the notes I'd jotted in Lamu, began to weave them into a poetic essay. It felt like sneaking away from work to watch waves break on the beach. Like a stolen hike in the hills with a secret lover.

Issa Shivji appears to have a similar presentiment about our giving in to the Americans, and passively allowing them to breach our airspace across to Somalia to spray the peace-loving Islamic Courts with death.

I believe it is possible to stop the annihilation of the genes... the memories... of an old African peace, a peace that, once restored, would migrate and germinate the planet with its own self-confidence, but it is likely to require more than words to save us from this current predicament.
